BLOG CONTEST

A forest gnome has visited the library and left us with a wonderful new surprise. We have a new friend to welcome at the Henry Ford Centennial Library Children's Forest. He is very shy about being here. He is spending a lot of time reading in the treehouse and that seems to make him happy, but the librarians think he would be most happy if he had a name.

CAN YOU HELP US NAME OUR NEWEST FRIEND?
To enter in the contest:
1. Ask your Mom or Dad if it is okay.
(Safety first!)
2. Click on the "Comment" button below. Type in your name suggestion in the Comment box. Also, please include your Dearborn Public Library card number in the post.
(Tell your parents not to worry. We keep all comments private and will not publish any personal information. )
3. Entries must be posted by the first day of Summer Reading - June 22nd, 12:01 am.
(If you are staying up past bedtime to enter this drawing, why in the world did you wait until the last minute anyway?! Go to bed!!)
4. We will contact you using your library card contact information if you are the winner.
(The winner will be give an prize but we don't know what it is yet, so please don't ask!)
5. Check back often! After moose has chosen a name, all name suggestions will be listed in a following post.
(We expect he will let us know his favorite name with a clomp! clomp! of his hooves on the treehouse floor and a wiggle! twitch! of his beautiful brown antlers. Moose are expressive like that.)
Good Luck Everyone and thanks for reading our blog!

"Happy Birthday" 2x

Everyone is singing "Happy Birthday" twice to themselves over the sink these days. We know you are concerned about swine flu and are washing your hands, a good habit for the healthiest of days. Whether or not the media hype is worth it, healthy habits are important for all of us. Just remember, keep your hands away from the "t zone" to avoid germs. That is, don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth and read a few books about hygiene from the library.

Here are some non-fiction numbers to look for when you come to the library.

Health and hygiene --613
Influenza -- 616.203
Soapmaking -- 668.12

Stay healthy!

Spring Has Sprung!

We know the calendar claims that spring has been here for almost a full week, but today's rains really brought the idea of a new season home. In celebration here are a few books that celebrate spring, rain and our favorite combination: MUD!

Countdown to Spring by Janet Schulman greets spring by counting down with some of our favorite returning friends like ladybugs, butterflies and bunnies. The children who live in the house have a springtime surprise for their friends!

Celebrate the joys of Mud between your toes in the book of the same name by Mary Lyn Ray. From the scent of the first spring day to the greening of the world, it's all in this fun book.

Don't like the rain? See what Wally's grandfather did when a big rain hit his house. Read We hate rain! by James Stevenson.
Love rain and mud or hate them, remeber that spring has it all and there are only a few short weeks until summer!
Looking to get in out of the rain? See what we have going at the Dearborn Public Library!

Bored with your baby in the winter?
Take some ideas from our Mother Goose Storytime.
Do these rhymes in the car, while waiting for dinner at the restaurant, as a wake-up routing after nap time, or on the changing table.
Please don't forget inquire about future Mother Goose programs at
Henry Ford Centennial Library and Snow Branch Library

Hello Song

(Melody: London Bridge)

Hi, hello and how are you?

How are you? How are you?

Hi, hello and how are you?

How are you to-day?

These are Baby’s Fingers

These are baby’s fingers

(Kiss or touch fingers.)

These are baby’s toes.

(Kiss or touch toes.)

This is baby’s belly button,

(Touch belly.)

Round and round it goes.

(Circle belly button.)

Jack Frost

Jack Frost is very small,

(Show smallness with thumb and pointer.)

I’m sure he is out today.

He nipped my nose

(Point to nose.)

And pinched my toes

(Point to toes.)

When I went out to play.

Put Your Finger On Your Shirt

(Melody: If You’re Happy and You Know It)

Put your finger on your shirt, on your shirt.

Put your finger on your shirt, on your shirt.

Put your finger on your shirt,

Put your finger on your shirt,

Put your finger on your shirt, on your shirt.

On your pants…

On your shoes…

Your Nose Knows

(Point to body parts)

What does your nose know?

Your nose knows

It's got two eyes above it.

Your nose knows

It's got one mouth below it.

Your nose knows

It's got two ears beside it.

That's what your nose knows!

Butterfly Kiss

A butterfly

Fluttered by

And gave a kiss

Just like this.

(Brush eyelashes on baby's cheek)

Five Little Peas

Five little peas in a pea-pod pressed,

(Hold up fist.)

One grew, two grew, and so did all the rest.

(Open fingers slowly.)

They grew and they grew and they did not stop,

(Stretch all the fingers out.)

Until one day the pod went POP!

(Clap hands together.)

Father & Mother & Uncle John

(Baby faces room on adult's lap.)

Father & Mother & Uncle John

(Gently bounce baby)

went to the market one by one.

(Gently bounce baby)

Father fell off.

(Lean baby left.)

Mother fell off,

(Lean baby right.)

But Uncle John went on & on & on....

(Gently bounce baby faster & faster.)

Warm Hands Warm

Warm hands, warm,

(Rub hands together.)

Do you know how?

If you want to warm your hands,

Blow on them now.

(Blow gently on clasped hands.)

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes

Head, shoulders, knees and toes,

Knees and toes.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes,

Knees and toes.

Here's my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my nose.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes,

Knees and toes.

Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

(Roll hands.)

All the King’s horses

(Wiggle fingers on one hand.)

And all the King’s men

(Wiggle fingers on other hand.)

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

(Fold hands together.)

Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush

Here we go round the mulberry bush,

The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush,

Here we go round the mulberry bush,

On a cold and frosty morning.

This is the way we brush our teeth...

This is the way we comb our hair...

Congratualtions and Be Prosperous Winners

It was a busy day yesterday at the library.

We celebrated the start of the Year of the Ox. 恭喜發財, Gong hei fat choi, "Congratulations and be prosperous!" The Lunar New Year is a multi-day celebration so you still have time to join in the festivities! A great way to celebrate would be to have a Chinese meal or fortune cookies. The library also has several Chinese folktales, books about the Lunar New Year and books by Chinese and Chinese-American authors like Grace Lin. So, congratulations and be prosperous!

Also yesterday, the American Library Association announced several awards for children's books.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman was named the Newbery Medal winner. Newbery Honor books are The Underneath by Kathi Applet, The Surrender Tree: poems of Cuba's Struggle for freedom by Margarita Engle, Savvy by Ingrid Law and After Tupac and D. Foster by Jacqueline Woodson.

The Caldecott Medal winner is The House in the Night illustrated by Beth Krommes and written by Susan Marie Swanson. Caldecott Honor books are A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever written and illustrated by Marla Frazee, How I Learned Geography written and illustrated by Uri Shulevitz, and River of Words: the story of William Carlos Williams illustrated by Melissa Sweet and written by Jen Bryant.

The Theodore Seuss Geisel Award is given for the best book for beginning readers. This year's winner is Are You Ready To Play Outside? by Mo Willems. The Geisel Honor books are Chicken said 'Cluck!' by Judyann Ackerman Grant, One Boy by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, Stinky by Eleanor Davis and Wolfsnail: a backyard predator by Sarah C. Campbell.

There are many, many more award winners. Be sure to check out the entire list and then check the library catalog. Interested in past years winners? Look at the ALA website.

Celebration is in the air. Join in!!
