Summer Reading Program Ends

Well, hate to say it, but all good things come to and end and that time has come for us too. Today is the last day of the Summer Reading Program 2007. We had a great time.

Thank you so much to our reviewers for sharing some of their favorite reads this summer! Thank you too to their parents for letting us share those reviews with all of you! If you enjoyed reading with us this summer, please drop us a line!

We're sad to say that our blog is being suspended for the time being. Hopefully, we will be able to bring you some more reviews and share some more of our favorite books and things with you another time!

Remember to come to the Reading Wrap-Up Party on Thursday, August 9th. It will run 6-8pm. We'll have Grand Prize presentations fomr Mayor O'Reilly, a chance to show your skills with Dance Dance Revolution, karaoke singing, face painting and other activities. Oh, and food too!

Please keep visiting us and keep reading!

Signing off...

You've Seen the Movie...Now Read the Book

In June, it was Nancy Drew coming to the silver screen. Last week, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix came to life. Both of these movies came from a series of popular books.

You can find several other movies that started as books at the library. Here are just a few released in recent years. (the first date is the book release, the second the movie)

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo 2000 and 2005

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine 1997 and 2004

Flicka (My Friend Flicka) by Mary O'Hara 1941 and 2006

Hoot by Carl Hiaason 2002 and 2006

How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell 1973 and 2006

Holes by Louis Sachar 1998 and 2003

Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket (the first 3 books in the series) 1999, 1999, 2000 and 2004

Just remember the book and the movie aren't always the same. Check them both out to see and read for yourself.

Thank you, Adele, for telling us about the short chapter book Minnie and Moo and the Seven Wonders of the World by Denys Cazet.

Graphic Novels...Not just your favorite comics!

You love reading the comic strips that come on Sunday, right? You've maybe even picked up a book of collected strips from the library.

Well, graphic novels are more than just your favorite characters or a collection of comic strips. They may look like a collection of comic strips, but these are full-length stories told by both pictures and word bubbles. Sometimes the word bubbles are even left out.

But isn't that what picture books are? And aren't those for little kids?

Well, yes to both of those questions. The difference being that graphic novels are much more complex than a picture book.

Come on into the library and check them out.

Meet some new friends like Owly or Babymouse. Some of your favorites like the Time Warp Trio, the Babysitters' Club or the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew have gone graphic. (Hey, remember that the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew fill an SRP bingo square!)

Graphic novels aren't just fiction either. You can find graphic non-fiction too. Dinosaurs, myths and biographies are just some of the non-fiction subjects that have gone graphic. (Wait! There are some more bingo squares to mark off!)

So, visit the bears and go graphic this summer at the Dearborn Public Library!

I've got a a clue do you?

Welcome to our Summer Reading Program 2007 Blog.

We're going to use this space to let you know about some things we're doing, and some things you can do. You might even get to be a podcast star and tell us what you think about books you're reading.

Get a Clue @ Your Library. So that's the theme. What exactly does that mean?

Whatever you want it to. Read some mysteries. Read about something mythical or mysterious. Read about how the police solve crimes or how spies go about their business. Aliens, dinosaurs, lost civilizations. They're all good.

Come on in, grab a Bingo sheet, get some prizes, do a craft, go on a story walk or gee, even read a book or two.

Oh, and keep watching this space.
